But don’t let that mess with any cynical perceptions; he’s better on the cut than most on the Gold Coast and has a monster library of vinyl and digital music across a pile of styles. Meekee always keeps it fresh, putting together butter-smooth sets across chill, reggae, dub, soul, funk, ghetto beats, hip hop, breaks, bass and bangers.
He’s a genuine DJ. Soulful, conscious and always progressive. Since pulling apart and re-configuring various bits of electrical equipment as a nerdy kid, Meekee’s always enjoyed the machination of things, figuring out the way they work – a perfect preparation for almost five years behind the decks, putting together and pulling apart sets and tracks. As one half of Probably (along with Chiaz), he co-hosted Radio Metro’s ‘Eclectronic Sessions’ show for three years – the Coast’s most experimental electronic mix-up. A short stint at Kirra’s Bread and Butter was threaded through an ongoing, four-year residency at the GC’s most bohemian joint, The Swingin’ Safari. Here they get to push things forward, working their way through regular four-hour sets that often result in a sweaty frenzy, the whole room packed, hands in the air and loving it.
Of late, he’s started playing some sets with Fisher Price, working towards a slightly tougher sound – it’s still funk-based, but with fatter bass, loads of clever re-edits and splashes of dub and dubstep throughout. Regular drops include work by Seeed Daigo, Cut La Vis, DJ Twister, The Nextmen, Stickybuds, Culcha Candela, A Skillz and Fort Knox Five right through to MJ Cole, Rephrase, Daft Punk, Tipper, Roni Size and Parker.
Meekee has the rare ability to read any room beautifully, to put smiles on faces and get asses on the floor.
