Kristian Hernandez

DJ, turntablist, producer, musician and visual designer, Kristian Hernandez has rocked dance floors across the globe from Sydney to Paris, London to New York, Barcelona to Tokyo and everywhere in between. Equally at ease playing for small crowds in underground circuits as in amphitheatres filled with tens of thousands of people, one thing stands true: he knows just how to make a body move.

Incessant travels and immersion into diverse cultures both practically and musically has refined Krisitan's understanding of the inherent language of the beat: that it is universal and that it runs deep into the human psyche. It is no surprise then that his musical tastes span a multitude of genres and forms where he has parlayed his early education in latin rhythms, jazz subdivisions, funk meters, soul melodies and hip-hop culture into fluency with more expansive sounds such as the beats of house, the etherealness of world music, the excess of breaks, the irregular meters of jazz, the heat of latin grooves and the surge of drum n' bass.

Kristian possesses the uncanny ability to stir up a dance floor regardless of the setting and has moved audiences along with acts like Basement Jaxx, De La Soul, DJ Craze, LTJ Bukem, Felix Da House Cat, DJ Jazzy Jeff, The Black Eyed Peas, Carl Cox, Gang Starr, Mark Rae, Miguel Migs, Mix Master Mike, Moby, Norman Jay, Public Enemy, Roger Sanchez, Jojoflores and many others. He first gained notice as a gifted turntablist when he won the Australian Qld. DMC Championships in 1999 and 2000. Soon after, he set dance floors and air waves alight as the host of Australia's longest running Hip-Hop, Soul, Funk and R&B radio show called ‘Blackbeat’Apart from his world tours as a DJ, he has lent his talents to bands like the legendary Australian act Regurgitator, the jazz/funk/fusion band Zephyr Timbre and the electronic Soma Rasa. Has been the Maestro at world rewound clubs such as Cielo in New York, Loft in Sydney, The End in London just to name a few.

Currently based in Asia, Kristian has fostered the first and only club night in Manila, Philippines that is dedicated to the dancer where world-renowned dance crews come out to play. All styles are represented and free form is more than encouraged. It doesn't matter if you're a pro— the deranged monkey dance is just as revered as Breakdance, House, Afro, Broken, Latin, Hip Hop, Funk, Jazz, and the likes. Kristian also endorses ‘gotsoul’, working hand-in-hand with long-time friend Jojoflores.

Although it is easy in this day and age to lay claim to the art of being a global nomad, few can truly embody this post-modern sensibility. Calling the world his playground, Kristian is the product of a distinct combination of ethnicity's and exotic locales. His Asian and European heritage, Australian upbringing and lifelong experience of travelling and performing his music has created a unique individual whose resume and musical influences transcend longitudes, latitudes and attitudes. You never know where you may find him next but it is certain that wherever he is, people will be dancing.
