| Arun Prasad |
A self confessed childhood music geek, Arun’s introduction to playing music, amongst other things, was brought about by his involvement in the school band at an early age. As his overall appreciation of music grew, so did his knowledge and passion for music. Later on, he was exposed to a lot of jazz, funk and dance...where friends and relatives would pass on unwanted records to this budding young connoisseur of music. By having the exposure to different genres his whole musical outlook changed, thanks to probably one of the most important trait’s that what he thought this had to offer, which is the freedom through improvisation.
On a more personal level, Arun graduated in teaching from James Cook University in Townsville while working as a mobile DJ. While both his brothers experimented with the idea of playing in bands and writing their own material, Arun was busy exploring the many boundaries he could of the music genre. It was this fusion of organic instrumentation and electronic dance music that really brought about an excitement and passion for Arun, which changed his whole outlook on music in his early years.
The key to Arun’s success is his versatility: unlike many nightclub DJs, who constrain themselves to a narrow sub-genre of music, Arun’s broad musical taste and many years’ experience make him a versatile party starter equally comfortable in the biggest of mainstream clubs, in the shadows of the underground house music parties or playing Latin and funky house tracks in lounge bars.
“I’ve never believed in sticking to the rules” he says. "To me I like to pick the best tracks across a wide range of genres and streamline them to suit my set”
In an industry where it can sometimes seem like any kid with a pair of decks and a collection of tracks can call himself a DJ, Arun’s quiet confidence and consistency stands as testament to the sort of professionalism that only comes after years working as a DJ.
Arun currently performs solo and otherwise has performed at The Rum Jungle, Drift, Mirror Soul, Iceworks, Oxford 152, The LA Hotel, Lightspace, Twenty 1, Lotus Lounge and Melbas among others. Although he loves performing he equally loves mixing music and doesn’t intend to slow down yet.
